Our Spiritual Diet

I was watching a program on VH-1 the other day, Celebrity Fit Club, in which eight famous people (musicians, actors/actresses, etc.) decided they wanted to get in shape. They went before a doctor, a psychologist, and a drill sargeant in an effort to get fit. And it's no surprise that such a program was created, as many are concerned about their health and dieting.

But there is a diet that we often overlook: our spiritual diets. 2 Timothy 2:15, "Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth." We must never neglect our spiritual diet, but continually study the Word revealed by God. There are many forms of spiritual "junk" food, and so we must be cautious in how we study. Devotional books have their place, as do commentaries and other study aids, but our "main course" must be the Word of God.

Along with dieting, we should give attention to exercise as well. 2 Timothy 3:16-17, "All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works." Studying does us little good if we do not take those things we learn and apply them to our lives.

Titus 2:11-12, "For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world..."

How is your spiritual diet and exercise?

What a great article Jason. We need to be worried about our spiritual diet more than our physical diet. This is not only a problem in the world but in the church also. Many times in the church we will place our physical needs before our spiritual needs. Our public prayers are usually filled with requests for our physical needs (sick, government, rain, daily bread, etc.) and we should pray for our physical needs but what about our spiritual needs? We need to pray for those needs as well. I appreciate what you are doing with this blog and I look forward to many more excellent articles just like this one.

P.S. Can I put this article in our church bulletin?
